Julie Barnes Dahl
Julie works across several media, with tattooing as her primary practice. Alongside this, she unfolds her practice through drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and analog photography. She draws inspiration from the close and immediately present, where relationships and nature form the basis. The work process often revolves around iterations, where a motif is repeated, shifted, and broken down.
Monotypes – When repetitions create dreams
In the series of monotype prints, Julie takes her starting point in the squared mathematics notebook. Here, the grid functions as a set of rules for systematics and repetition, but the repetitions are used to open a freer, more dreamy space. The stringent pattern, etched into the copper plate, contrasts with the deep and soft colors of the applied printing ink, creating a tension between the tight and the lively.
